Prophet Omega: Friends Seen and Unseen

I'm ordering this video: Friends Seen and Unseen from genuine human productions. I was listening to the Spiritual Tourist soundrack (soundtrack to a book!) yesterday and started thinking about the Prophet Omega, wondering if there was any info about him on the web or, more importantly, mp3s of his sermons/broadcasts. Well, yes, there are. But difficult to find because some idiots named their band after him. And they're well known enough to clog Google almost completely. Anyway, I finally found this film, which looks pretty good.

I first heard of the Prophet from Jenni, who heard of him from her friend Col. Bruce Hampton, who is featured in the clip on the website, right before Billy Bob T. The Colonel, she said, quotes the Prophet all the time. So, when we were listening to the Spiritual Tourist track by Conrad Praetzel, she says, "That's the Prophet Omega!"

Found two sermons by the Prophet on The Shemps' site, right at the top of the page.

Also, you can download the Praetzel track built around Prophet Omega samples on his site.

Irene Hardwicke Olivieri : Paintings

I could've sworn I blogged this before, but damned if I see any evidence of it. Weird.

Discovered this amazing painter, who apparently was in The Foams, one of the bands back in the heyday of the aforementioned Raul's. (I never saw them.)

Great paintings. Kinda Frida Khalo without the anguish. The exuberance of Lynda Barry. That's as far as I can go with the comparisons. I bought her book, Irene Hardwicke Olivieri : Paintings, which is wonderful. But the paintings are so detailed, you'd need a poster-sized reproduction to see half of the details. Still, the price is right, so click the link and buy the book. Or just check out her gorgeous site.

yoga punk

Spent most of the weekend at a yoga retreat at Barsana Dham. (I'd link to BD, but their site only supports MSIE and will totally lock up your browser if you're using Mozilla Firefox like I am. That shit ain't cool.) The yoga retreat was excellent. Flawless weather, too.

Came in to town Saturday night for the Raul's Reunion, a reunion of the old Austin punk scene (documented on my idletimearchive site). Great fun. It was a little odd to go from yoga and meditation at a Hindu ashram to a smoky little nightclub, but not as weird as I thought it would be. And it was great to see old friends (and some new) and awesome to see The Next again. Damn.

Who won?

Loki has figured out the American psyche: "The Republicans played the game well - focusing in on the collective reptilian brain, feeding basic primal paranoiac imprints, finding an easy enemy to identify and destroy."

It sure sets one to thinking of Electing to Leave.

Felt Like a Gringo, by The Minutemen

Got a ton of white boy guilt, that's my problem,
Obstacle of joy, one reason to use some drugs.
Slept on a mexican beach slept in trash - American trash -
thinking too much can ruin a good time.

I asked a mexican who ran a bar for americans "Who won" I said "The election?",
He laughed, I felt like a gringo,
They played a song and had some fun with us.

Why can't you buy a good time?
Why are there soldiers in the street?
Why did I spend the fourth in someone else's country?
